Holiday Art Gifts: Me in NYC

My mom's been wanting this for a while, and this year I finally delivered. It comes from a photo of me taken a couple of years ago outside the New York Comicon.

Holiday Art Gifts: Spider-man

Since I'm a broke artist type, for some of the people on my Holiday gift list I created original works of artsy art stuff. First up, for my favorite nephew Michael: Spider-man.

It's been a long, long while since I used watercolors, but I started to get some hang of it on this piece.

A night with Dr. Sketchy

This past Monday I attended my first ever Dr. Sketchy Anti Art School event. A Dr. Sketchy event is described as "life drawing with a twist. Drinking, Drawing, Dames and Games!" It was held at the Gypsy Cafe, a fantastic little Mediterranean place here in Pittsburgh owned by my friends Jim and Mel. It was enormous fun, I even won a couple of prizes for my sketches: a bottle of wine and a rather unique balloon animal creation.

I've posted the sketches here. Each one drawn between 2 and 10 minutes. The theme for the night was "Hobo Erotic." You can see some photos from the night at Amber Love's Facebook page. Did I mention I had a great time? Well, I did! I can't wait to do it again next month.

Here's one of the sketches that won me a prize. A hobo clown created a balloon animal before our very eyes and we had to sketch what we thought it might be:

My sketch was the night's winner for that particular round, so I won the balloon animal. I'll let you guess what it is:

More showing off

Check it out, another example of how a recipient of the Monster Mini Sketches, and a ton of them at that, choose to display them in his home. So cool! Glad you dig them enough to show them off, Ryan!

Monster Mini Sketches - The Final Batch

Here's the last of the Monster Mini Sketches. Plus, Green Arrow, the award for the winner of the second week of The Guns of Shadow Valley Comments Contest.

It was a lot of fun doing all these sketches and I really appreciate all of you who bought a mini sketch of your own. I may do this again sometime(though probably not at these prices!) And keep your eyes open for the Monster Minis Sketchbook, coming in 2010.

Cool stuff! (including Neil Gaiman)

Here's some cool stuff I thought I'd post. First up, pics of how a couple of monster mini sketch buyers have chosen to display their purchases. This just gives me a good feeling, that they would put so much effort into displaying my work. Like I'm a real gosh fer darn artiste. They must actually like their sketches!

Second up: My buddies Chad and Heather Seewald, and Adam and Tracy Besenyodi went to a lecture given by Neil Gaiman in Cleveland a few months back. Chad had gotten a convention commission from me previously of the character Destiny from Gaiman's famed Sandman series. When they met Neil, Chad had him sign the sketch and Adam snapped this pic. I think that's pretty cool!

Guns of Shadow Valley - Comments Contest!

The Guns of Shadow Valley weekly comments contest starts this week! To enter the contest, all you need to do is leave a comment on the Guns website for one of this week's new pages. Once your comment is approved, you are entered into the contest to win a free original mini sketch, made custom just for you, of any one character you choose.

These mini sketches will be like the ones done recently for the Monster Mini Sketch Sale last month: they are 4x6, ink and ink wash. If you win that week, you will be notified and asked what character you would like drawn for your very own mini sketch. The sketch will be lovingly created by series artist Dave Wachter(me!) and hand delivered to your address by a uniformed member of the United States Postal Service. There will be one winner per week. One word posts, spam, or comments lacking any insight or effort will not be considered. Only approved comments will enter you in the contest, so make them thoughtful/entertaining/funny, and of course, make the comments relative to that comic page or the story as a whole. We can't wait to hear from you!

Medusa and Black Bolt

Here's a commission that's been some time coming: Medusa and Black Bolt, looking regal, as requested. So much hair, how does she wash it all? Does she use a separate conditioner? Does she repeat?

Cute Bunny Rabbit

I've been drawing lots of monsters and violence lately. Here's a little something to clense the pallet before the next onslaught. I did this quick drawing of a rabbit spotted at a park in Pittsburgh, for my mom's birthday.

Monster Mini Sketch Sale: Over!

That's it folks, I've got all the orders I can possibly take. After some family business on Saturday, I will be working diligently to finish the rest of these sketches and have them in the mail sometime next week.

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who ordered a sketch, I really appreciate the business! If you were hoping to get a sketch or two but couldn't get your order in on time, it's likely I'll do this again. Whether that's sooner or later all depends on my circumstances.

The Guns of Shadow Valley - Chapter 2 has begun!

Some of you may have heard about my webcomic: The Guns of Shadow Valley. If you haven't, then I'm creating this here blog post to give you the lowdown and encourage you to maybe, y'know, check it out!

The Guns of Shadow Valley, or 'Guns', or GoSV, is a serialized adventure webcomic. It's a Western, but with a Superpowered twist. It's sort of like the Magnificent Seven meets the JLA, or if you're a Marvel fan, the Avengers, or the X-Men.

The official pitch:
"Somewhere in the mysterious Shadow Valley lies a secret that could forever change the face of the frontier. To protect that secret, a posse of gunmen with special abilities must come together and defend against a tribe of ghostly warriors, an advancing army led by a deranged Colonel, and the perils of the valley itself.

The Guns of Shadow Valley is an exciting new Western adventure series from the creators of Scar Tissue. Set in the 1870s in the Oklahoma Territories, Guns is a tale of intrigue and adventure that puts a new spin on the Old West."

New pages go up every Tuesday and Thursday at: gunsofshadowvalley.com The first chapter is already up and we've just started to post pages from chapter 2.

And as time goes on, we'll be adding more goodies for you to explore on the website. Check it out, it's totally free. If you like it, you can subscribe to the feed, leave a comment, become a Facebook fan, all that good stuff!

Thanks for your time, and we here at Guns really do appreciate the support!
